Be Kind

Are you kind?

In my book, Girl, God's Not Done... Simple Steps to Loving You like God does, I look at what kindness is vs generosity. Did you know that someone can be generous but not kind?

Generosity is usually the act of giving, whether material things or time, without expecting anything in return. Generosity is a form of Kindness, but kindness is more about how you show up through thoughtful actions, consideration for others, which usually aims to help others or make their lives better in some way. It can be through a simple smile!

Generous people aren't necessarily kind. I could be wealthy and give to a children's home every year for tax incentives, but never take the time to visit the home to show kindness to the children.

I am not placing judgment on those who are generous; we can be kind without spending a dollar and have a greater impact!

Here are some ways to cultivate kindness with others:

  • Practice active listening: When someone is speaking to you, put down your phone, make eye contact, and focus on fully understanding what they are saying. This shows you value their perspective.

  • Perform acts of kindness: Look for small ways to brighten someone’s day—like holding the door, giving a sincere compliment, or volunteering your time. Doing good for others can increase your own feelings of kindness.

  • Develop empathy: Try to imagine what it feels like to walk in someone else’s shoes. Consider how they might be feeling and what they might be going through. This can foster compassion.

  • Think about loving-kindness: Visualize radiating kindness and compassion toward yourself, loved ones, strangers, and even difficult people.

  • Surround yourself with kind people: Spend time with friends and family members who model kindness. Their example can be inspiring.

  • Be patient with others: Recognize that everyone is on their own journey. Respond to frustrations with understanding rather than judgment.

  • Cultivate gratitude: Take time each day to reflect on things you are grateful for. Appreciating the kindness and goodness in your life can inspire you to pay it forward.

"The world is full of nice people; if you can't find one, be one." Nishan Panwar.

Kindness may not always be readily apparent, but it's a quality worth cultivating to help make the world a better place.
